Kim & Calvin's Adoption Story
Kim and Calvin knew they wanted to be parents when they said “I do” more than eight years ago, but they never imagined the long road ahead. After many unsuccessful attempts to conceive, the couple turned to adoption. They met with a local adoption agency, but it wasn’t the right fit. After meeting with the social worker from Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s adoption program, the couple said it felt “like meeting a friend.” Their dream of becoming parents was closer to reality.
Their adoption journey continued by supporting the program’s annual golf tournament to help create forever families and educate others about the loving choice of adoption while waiting for their angel to find them. Kim and Calvin said the waiting process was difficult at times, but the couple supported each other every day. Kim did not allow herself to even begin buying things for the baby that they prayed for. The only baby item they had was a car seat.
Then, their dreams came true when a call meant that Luke Patrick was going to change their lives forever. With just a car seat in her vehicle, Luke came home, and Kim ran to the store for diapers, bottles and the other essentials. Kim said the day they met their son was “scary, awesome, and a mix of everything – our dreams were finally coming true!”
Now, Luke is a happy, sweet boy who has a smile that lights up his entire face. That smile never faded as Luke recently underwent surgery to correct his Craniosynostosis, a birth defect where the skull fuses together prematurely. Kim and Calvin knew about Luke’s condition but never worried about providing their son the care he needed. With a zig-zag scar from his successful surgery, Luke smiles as he continues to grow with loving parents like Kim and Calvin there for him every step of the way.
