The image captured in the maquette shows the Steersman navigating on a Foggy Night. A Steersman is second in command to the Captain. He’s not as good a boat driver as the Captain, as he demonstrated the night we hit the Sun Oil Docks above Baton Rouge. It was late and Junior and I were in the galley having coffee when, Wham! Junior, an old hand, quietly said, put on your life vest, get your flashlight and Do Not Go Out on Them Barges.
I soon knew why. The barges started breaking up with cables snapping like gunshots. We waited for the action to subside and then rounded up the errant barges like cowhands rounding up spooked horses. Never forgot it. Thank you Junior.
Bronze with wood base. Estimate 18” x 14” x 10”. Edition of 5.
I will create Steersman from the maquette. It will take about four months for sculpting and casting. You have the right of refusal. Perhaps you would like to be the first on your block to own the trilogy: Deckhand, Cook and Steersman. Inquire.
