The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is proud to announce the four exceptional honorees who have been selected to receive the 2018 Carle Honors award for their contributions to the field of children's literature:

Artist: Paul O. Zelinsky’s brilliant work is highlighted by his exceptional artistry, mastery of many styles, and poignant storytelling.  In 1998 he received the Caldecott Medal for his illustrated retelling of Rapunzel.  Three more of his books have received Caldecott Honors: Hansel and Gretel (1985), Rumpelstiltskin (1987), and Swamp Angel (1995).  He is regarded as one of the most critically successful artists in the field of children’s literature.

Angel: The Sendak Fellowship & Workshop,
represented by Lynn Caponera and Dona Ann McAdams
for fostering young illustrators and writers and providing them with incredible creative opportunities.  Maurice Sendak started the annual fellowship program in 2010 to “create work…that excites and incites.”  Previous fellows include Elisha Cooper, Yuyi Morales, Antoinette Portis, Sergio Ruzzier, Steven Savage, and other talents.

Bridge: The Bologna Children’s Book Fair, represented by Elena Pasoli, has successfully brought together books and publishers from around the world, creating a broad global audience for children’s literature. As both a cultural book show and international rights business forum, the fair creates a unique locus of discussion when it comes to children’s books’ content.

Mentor: Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop has had incredible influence as a children’s literature scholar.  Her work, which includes Shadow and Substance: Afro-American Experience in Contemporary Children’s Fiction (1982) and Kaleidoscope: A Multicultural Booklist for Grades K–8 (1994), has championed diversity and created the indispensable idea of books as both “windows and mirrors.”

The Host for the 2018 awards is author Andrea Davis Pinkney.  Her exemplary work has garnered her numerous accolades, including multiple Coretta Scott King Book Awards, Jane Addams Children’s Literature Honor citations, the Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor medal, and many more.  A successful author, she is also a successful children’s book publisher and editor with titles Allen Say, Lois Lowry, Toni Morrison, and more.
